Guys, I have this really annoying rattling squeak coming from my driver side rear wheel well. I had my fiancee drive me around while I layed in the back trying to pin point the noise. I pulled the carpet back and it seems loudest about a foot or so behind the rear door latch. My initial thoughts were the door latch or something inside the door, but it was not it. The door makes the standard clunk when hitting bumps. I also tried holding down the wiring but couldn't rid the noise. It's somewheres behind the wheel well and the plastic in the inner fender well. I would have taken the fender flare and inner plastice piece off but I noticed that it is attached with plastic rivets and those push in clips that seems to break when you pull them out. Does anyone else have this problem? Also, are the plastic rivets a store bought or dealer only item and can they be installed using a regular rivet gun?

 

Do you have a manual, if you do, put some fuel tubing around the clutch line. The clutch line is located between two heat sheilds against the fire wall underneath the steering column, and bangs against the two metal shields. The noise will disappear.

 

Ryan, unfortunately I have an auto. The sound is definately coming from the wheel well. I placed my ear on it and the noise is loudest there. This sound kinda sounds like a rattling clatter.

 

Not trying to be funny - but did you make sure your jack and tools etc. in the recess are tied down? I found it was my jack making noise every time I went over a bump.

 

Yep, that was one of my initial thoughts. I took that and every single other thing that I could take out of the jeep. I wish it was something that simple. I also pulled the driver taillight of in order to see if there could be any plugs or wires tapping against the body. And, i get the noise with the back seat up and folded down.

 

i had a thunk comming from the drivers side mostly and on real hard bumps would come from the passengers side. after looking high and low i found my rock hard bumper was hitting the bottom of the quater panel. trimmed it back and wa-la.

 

bkb415 - did you add anything lately?

 

I had a similar issue and it was the shock. The lower bolt where the shock attaches to the axles was cross threaded from the factory and was not tight. It would rattle when I hit bumps. It took me a long time to find it.

To fix mine I had to cut the bolt and replace it with a new one.

 

joe002, the only thing i added was my CB. I had the noise before I even did that. The noise has been present since i bought the jeep a month ago. I want to find it myself becaus I HATE going to the dealership for service. Especially with noises. They always look at me like I'm stupid and tell me everything sounds normal. Also, I only hear the noise when driving at steady speeds on certain roads. I guess I hit a certain frequency.

 

I just asked because I got a strange noise after I changed my rear bumper. It turns out it that it would hit on the body when going over bumps. It looked good in the garage - noisy on the trails. Once found it was easy to make the modification so it wouldn't make the noise.

I don’t have any other ideas right now. Hope you can find and fix your too.
