Front DS - Anyone know what this little ring is???
Stock JK TechBulletin board forum regarding issues with OE (original equipment) components of the Jeep JK Wrangler (Rubicon, Sahara, Unlimited and X) such as factory suspension parts, engine, transmission, body parts, interior fixtures and the on-board computer.
Replace the clamp with a new OEM one. You'll need a set of clamping pliers to clamp it tight. If you use a large screw-type clamp, it will cause a little imbalance in your shaft.
Alright, I just picked up a clamp that appears to be exactly like the OEM one. I showed the pictures to a mechanic, and he said that the rubber ring that the clamp goes on is actually just for rotational balancing, not for sealing the CV joint or anything. I don't see any evidence of leakage anywhere on the boot, so it looks like it should be fine for now.
