Default gas tank max volume 18.6?

My warning light (gas tank) is coming on at about 15.5 gal. I know this because I have immediately filled up after the light came on....2 times. So it looks like there is a three gallon reserve. Does it really hold 18.6 gal? anyone run out and fill to the max?

edit: this is a 2 door X.

I believe it holds 20 gallons, but the gauge reads empty at around 18.5 or so.

That is not totally correct ...

Fuel capacities, per the sales brochure:

2 Door: 18.6 US Gallons
4 Door: 21.6 US Gallons

And the fuel level indicator light (from the manual):

4. Low Fuel Warning Light
When the fuel level reaches approximately 2 U.S.
Gallons (7.6L) this light will come on and remain on
until fuel is added. The “Low Fuel Warning Light”
may turn on and off again, especially during and after
hard braking, accelerations, or turns. This occurs due to
the shifting of the fuel in the tank.

Default yeah..mun..

I edited my initial post....I have the 2 dr X....so 18.6 comes out of the specs. I am trying to establish max range.....so it is good to know how much is left in the tank when the light goes on. All trucks will be a little different.....plus minus. So far I have established that I may have 3 gal left when the light goes on. The only way I can prove this is running out of gas...and then refill. I've yet to have a vehicle that had exactly the gas capacity that the spec said. I travel Mexi a lot so there are some distances between gas stations. I guess that's why people have the 5 gal cans in the back LOL!

I haven't run out completely yet - but I have managed to squeeze about 17 gallons in at the pump. My light usually does come on around 15.5 gallons.

you never will get 18.6 gallons in there. There is supposed to be extra space for fumes and for the gases to expand or some of the other. At least thats what I have read/been told.

I stand corrected. I've never come close to putting 21.6 gallons in my 4-door's tank though. The light comes on WAY before I'm down to 2 gallons left. I think the most I've ever put in on a fill-up was 18.5 gallons and that was when the needle was on "E". Usually if I do it when the light comes on I end up putting in around 17 gallons.

My 2 Door X Gas Light comes on at 14 Gallons almost on the nose every time. I've run it down until I've been on E and I've never gotten over 16.2 gallons in it, I was actually wondering if I actually had a 16.8 Gallon tank that I read as 18.6 but i guess the jeep just has a better reserve than i think it does.

That's funny because when my gas light comes on, the jeep only takes about 14.5 gallons to fill. I just run it down until the gas light comes on every time. About 220 miles. Kind of a convenient reminder actually.
