Default Has anybody removed the center console?

I'm having problems finding threads about removing the center console and moving the "shifter" from the center console to behind the steering wheel like that of a pick-up truck. My main goal is to maximize interior space. The vehicle I had before my beloved Jeep was a 1997 Honda CRV. It was an economy sized SUV but had great interior space because of where everything was located. I'm 6'2" 210lbs and I could jump from the front passenger seat to the back seat with ease in that thing. I want to mimic this same kind of interior feel but wanted to see if anyone on here has done it already. Any info will help thanks.

I've removed my console to replace it with a new one & it was a fairly straight forward job (was carying a load of beer kegs in the back that shifted and broke the console & mounts), but I think you're talking about relocating the gear shifter as well? Also, under that console are the electrics for the ESP system (a whole bunch of wires & sensors) so you'd still have to deal with that even if you can fab up a colum-shift gear selector.

moving the shift lever is a huge project... first if you are a 4x4 you have 2 shifters to move, secondly there are lots of electronics under there with wiring harnesses going in different directions... thirdly you would somehow have to fab up a shifter linkage and somehow mount it to the column where there are already 2 stalks... along with the shift interlock, and such...

im not sure if they made a mini-console for the automatic or not.. but im thinking that in 07 / 08 the base base model 2 door X came with just a mini-console.. might be the way to go....

I loved my first Wrangler in the 90's because I could climb in back from the front seat. I really dislike the center console too, but don't want to deal with all the electronics. If you come up with some fab there, please post you finished product. Also when the dash was very basic and smaller on the older models gave more room. I feel the Jeep has really gotten too much "car" interior and crappy plastic. I love my JK, dont get me wrong, but the interior is a fail on my 2010 and 1998 Jeeps.

I would say the mini console in the stock jeeps is your only option other than fabbing something yourself.

theres alot of wires and modules under the center console that you need to cover up. Its an easy job to take off.

Very true jeeptray, I think they are getting too domestic with the designs. I'm all for upgrades and updating but they should stay true to the basics. I will keep you guys updated with any progress.

I dont know.. I really like the updated design.. driving a friend's YJ on a long trip years ago i kept banging my knees on the air-conditioner every time I went to shift gears.... the idea of making it where the vents were under the dash and in the way I never really understood...

however i wish there was some PAINTABLE METAL in the dash so WHEN it gets scratched it can get fixed... the crappy plastic they use inside scratches way too easy
