I had only had my Jeep for a few weeks, and I was coming out of a class late at night. Opened up the door, set the key on my dash, started putting some stuff away and my phone rang. When I was done talking on the phone, I went to set my phone on the dash, but bumped my key into the gap. Spent the next 45 minutes with a clothes hanger and a magnet trying to get my key out. Finally called my wife to come bring me the spare, and I managed to get the key out about 4 mintues before she got there.

Last time i put a key up there, or anything for that matter.

I got my fat knuckle stuck back there, thought I was going to rip the dash out to get loose and then relaxed and only took a little skin.

There are two small square plugs on top of the most forward dash cover and I wonder if that hides clips or screws for removal of the thing. That foam pipe insulation sounds like the best, cheapest solution.

I've taken a preventive measure. This works great and looks good, too. I hope this helps.

I installed a pair of grab handles up in the corner of the a-pillar. Dropped one of the screws. Shook it loose & it fell throught. Followed that with a little plastic plug from the trim. Still waiting for it to reappear. I keep meaning to grab a few pieces of the foam. Put a piece across the dash. Put the rest to use for which it was intended. Maybe the winter weather will finally remind me....

I don't know what you all are complaining about. This is just an extra nifty feature of the Jeep. A present, if you will, of extra storage space... Of course, like the "Hotel California" once it goes in it doesn't come out. But Hey!, don't fret, at least it is your own personal void...

I've wondered why Jeep didn't give us the little dash tray on top like with the TJ's. It looks like there would be enough room.
