I'll have to try that I think I will try releasing the brake gradually as the green comes nearer and nearer.

No, it will not. It will let go when it senses wheel movement. You need to give it more gas than normal to overcome both the hill, and the applied brake resistance. Don't even think about the hill assist, just drive it like you would normally start up a hill, or in soft sand with a bit more gas than usual.

Disable the hill assist. Just apply your hand brake on a hill and release the foot brake. When it's time to go you'll have both feet available to increase RPM and release the clutch while simultaneously releasing the hand brake. That's the proper way.

WOW. You are really over thinking it. The hill start assist lets go as soon as you start moving forward... its to do just what it says...assist you on hills. So when you take your foot of the brake on a steep grade it holds for 3 seconds to allow you time to pop the clutch and start moving. You don't wait for the 3 seconds to go by before starting the process. That would kinds defeat the purpose and actually make starting on hills harder don't you think? I've read of a number of people getting fooled by this. My wife likes this feature while driving in heavy traffic. I like it on step hills on trails. Its a nice feature.

It can be disabled. I remember reading it in the manual. I was going to turn it off when I first got my jeep because it drove me nuts, but I learned to like it before I got the chance. Its a simple matter of key off, key on, press gas, honk horn, scratch your nuts and spin in a circle, or something like that....

Yeah, but don't forget to change the muffler fluid when you enable it again...

if you can do this with skill you don't need hill assist.

Yeah I learned to drive manual on my cousins JK the 07 model and it didn't have the Hill assist so I learned how to do it the other way.

Matt, it took me a while to get used to hill assist as well. I don't think it senses wheel movement and certainly not throttle input, it seems to just be a time delay. The main thing is to just take your time and not worry about rolling into the car behind you like you would an old school vehicle. Once you get used to the timing you will forget its there. The tip about not pushing to hard on the brake while stopped is a good one as the hill assist is just trapping even higher pressure on the brakes. You will eventually like the hill assist. CM

Drive it like a semi. Wait till you feel the tranny torque just a bit then release the clutch.
