I would agree with everyone else.

1. Try a new filter. I use a FRAM on my Camaro and I know guys who swear by em to be great.

2. Try a 100% Synthetic. Royal Purple is good. It's more expensive but it's worth it.

3. If neither of those work try like the electric pre-oiler idea. I have no idea how they work but I know they do.

Basically start with your least expensive fix and work your way to the most expensive.

i had a prelude before and i only used the k&n, or mobile 1 filters because the rest sucked for that car.

seems like others are good for the jeep, so i'll try some other brands and oils.

but it also seems like others don't have this problem after their jeeps sit, so the dealer might be an option. my worry there is that it will not replicate unless it sits for a few days and it would have to be there for start up, so without being able to do that, they'll tell me they don't hear a sound, nothing is wrong.

i have an 08, so it has the lifetime warranty

Use thicker oil.

Park it upsidedown.

Drain oil before starting, re-pour oil into engine, viola! No dry start.

Fill the oil spout to the top, thus ensuring all oil galleries are full prior to cranking.

Buy every oil addative on the market! They all claim to eliminate this problem, thus, no dry starts.

Drain the oil; replace with Bacon grease. Thas shit sticks to everything, and never comse off. Again, problem solved.

Use an oil pan from a pre '86 CJ-7, one with factory undercarraiage rust prevention systems, thus requiring one quate of oil prior to every start. No more dry starts.

If you are really that concerned about dry starts, consider a pre-oiler...

Any qualified mechanic can install this system in about 2 hours.

I've had good luck with Wix filters (sold at Napa as Napa gold filters).

I don't want to start a war but Frams are close to the poorest constructed filters you can buy (cardboard end-discs). Also there are a large number of JK owners who report dry starts with Mobil 1 filters. I just ran across another complaint about it here https://www.jk-forum.com/forums/show...23&postcount=5. So you probably want to skip that as well. Normally Mobil 1 filters are excellent and I use them on my other vehichles. But for some reason in the JK application a lot of people are having a problem with them.

You can get all kinds of information about oil and filters over at...

Go check out the forums and even consider posting your question up there.

Is there a reason your using 10-30 and not the recommended 5-30? The 10w won't help a bit, infact, it will take longer to pass through than the thinner 5w. Are you noticing low oil pressure on a guage? if not, are you assuming dry start because of engine noise? If so, have you ever noticed the same noise after a long idle?

the 10-30 is what i had in the garage. i don't have an oil pressure gauge (do i?)

so yes, i'm assuming the dry start because of engine noise after i start the jeep after it has been sitting for 4 or 5 days. never noticed it any other time - after idle, after sitting for just a day or 2.

jeep is 08 w/7k miles, and has done it since i got it - it has sat for 4-5 days and then been started since i got it.

noise lasts 1-3 seconds, and then goes away and does not come back.

i hear a clicking noise at idle, not sure what it is, but it is nothing like the grinding noise i get at the startup.

I also had trouble with the Mobil1 filter. I've had good luck with Bosch, two changes since the Mobile and no more noise. I haven't tried the Wix but they come highly recommended by many.

Due to the horizontal position of our filters, if the anti-drainback valve does leak it will empty the filter over time. Since long term parking makes your situation somewhat unique, you may have to get one of these pre-oiler things.

Good luck,
GK
