If you unplug the wire going to the seat belt on the B pillar it will disable the air bags. From what i can tell the seatbelt will ratchet tighte to protect you from the airbag. if its unpluged the airbag light comes on the dash. I regularly use a 4pt harness and the idea of an airbag blowing with a harness on i'm not sure what would happen.

You're correct because there aren't any in the seats. There used to be when there was a light indicating that the passenger side was off due to lack of weight. This hasn't been the case in a few years now on a JK. There are no sensors in the seat. When there is enough force they will go off. Too much to get into the engineering. They do work and have saved and will save numerous lives. If someone wants to shut them down, hey it's your a$$. Good luck. But as was said if by chance, and hopefully it never happens, it's determined the bags were defeated you will not be getting a pay out. I don't care how many papers someone writes, doing fatal crash investigations for years tells a real life real world different story. The smoke you see after an activation is non toxic powder. And, the urban legend of getting stuck in a vehicle that goes into water as an excuse to not wear a seat belt does not happen. Maybe once in the past 50 years and the occupant was dead upon impact anyway.

So there is no way to disable the front passenger airbag in a JK to protect if you are using a child seat in that position?

i did all the same stuff and took out all the glass, remove the liquids - no steam or oil burns for me, took out the gas tank - no possible explosions, reduced the weight of the jeep by removing the engine - no chance of flying parts, shaved weight off the wheels and tires, cut holes in the floor boards so we can all stick our feet out to make the Jeep move - purity of wheeling and togetherness!!

on the newer ones no

you might be able to unplug the seatbelt on the Bpillar but i think that will disable both passenger and driver.

LOL. Open the hood. Disconnect the battery. Open the fuse box. There should be a yellow plastic tab, it will have 2 ten amp fuses in it. Use a screwdriver to pry the tabs apart that hold the yellow tab/fuse holder in. Pull up on the yellow tab. It will pull both fuses out at the same time. These are for the airbags. My air bag on the driver side is not working properly and the light was constantly coming on and off chiming the whole time. Pulled the fuses and no more on off chime. The chime is enough to drive a man crazy!! Note the air bags WILL NOT WORK. The occupant restraint module does not have power to it any more.

Hope that helps...

after I lifted I thought about disabling the airbags but now wonder if they don't disable when in 4Hi or 4Lo.

I banged into a tree pretty good with stock bumper and thought they would go off but didn't. Maybe it's because I wasn't at speed but it was a hard hit.

I think all newer airbags from the last 10-15 years only deploy in crashes at pretty high speed. They will do more harm than good at low speeds and they significantly increase the cost of repairs if they do go off.

Again, whether you wear your seat belt or not or endorse air bags or not is your business. I have seen that both have saved many lives and prevented serious injury. I have never seen anyone driving a Jeep in my area not wearing a seat belt.
My 2011 has a big wiring harness with 8 or 9 wires running up into both front seats. The owner's manual says the Jeep may be equipped with track position sensors that adjust the deployment speed of the bags. It also says there may be a seat belt buckle sensor so the airbag will deploy differently if the seat belt is not fastened.

Apparently mine is equipped with the sensors. Seems strange that they would leave the sensors out of some models if they make the airbags safer. 2011 JK Sport with 24s and power convenience group.
