Default How important is the heat shield?

So we had a bad storm with lots of water a couple weeks ago. I drove through a flooded street and it mangled the heat shield on the side of the tranny. You could see the insulation hanging out..

Took it to the dealer, they just called and said to get to that heat shield you have to drop the gas tank and tranny and Im looking at ten hours labor.

They said if I want they can just snip the bad part of the heat shield off so its not hanging and saving me a ton of money.

My question is, is it okay to run like that? How critical is that heat shield?

AWWWWW MAN!

I was hoping this was a thread called: "Top Ten List of Things Overheard at NASA" regarding OBAMA budget cuts.

Yup. How is driving through water supposed to break the truck. I would demand warranty service.

I dont think the warranty will cover physical damage from hitting something. Insurance might cover it though.

They ended up just trimming the piece off. It was not much. Less than a quarter of the heat shield. The rest they were able to bend back in place. They didn't even charge me, which was nice.

The dealer is an idiot

That heat shield protects the plastic gas tank, heat and plastic don't mix

if you burst a seam boom no more jeep or Hellbound

That's about the funniest thing I've seen on this forum!!

Seriously. Had to wipe a tear I laughed so hard!

As far as the blanket above the transmission (if that's what you are talking about), the official name is "SILENCER, Floor Pan Front Tunnel", p/n 55361340AC. I suppose it also helps the interior from getting too hot. I could see why it would be a pain to replace. I'm not the expert here, but loosing a bit of it shouldn't hurt anything.

It doesn't matter. Unless they explained the danger in detail and recommended that they replace the shield on your dime and got in writing that you refused, the dealer would still be liable if something happened.

IMO, it is absurd given the cost of the heat shield.
