I need help!
SubscribeOK you guys are the best at figuring this stuff out so here's my question:
In regards to towing capacity, can my jeep SAFELY pull my boat this summer?
Boat has a dry wt of 3050 lbs. w/ a 42 gallon fuel capacity.
I have a dual axle trailer but don't know how to find the wt on this.
I have a 2008 Sahara unlimited w/ 3.73 gearing and factory tow group...according to Jeep's website it has a 3500 lb towing capacity.
Now the math.....
3050 lb boat wt.
273 lbs gas ( figuring 42 gallon tank full at 6.5 lbs per gallon)
_____________________
equals 3,323 lbs.
But how about the trailer and how does that factor in? Does that simply get calculated into the overall wt?
Any help or input would be appreciated.
Also, the boat trailer does have its own braking system.

Last time I checked, the OEM tow receiver is a Class I receiver...don't think it's 3500# rated

Works if he has a weight distribution system... but I'm not sure what that constitutes

I saw that...Jeep site and dealer inquiries state it's still a Class I receiver hitch..max trailer weight is 2000 lbs....I say we have a discrepancy

I tow a trailer all the time - the 2007 4 door Sahara w/ 4:10 gears ( factory towing pkg) is only rated for 2500 lbs. You could possibly do it - but you'd need electric brakes and a lower gear ratio than 3:73. If you have an automatic - always turn off the Overdrive. I could be wrong - but thats my 2 cents. Just FYI - my Haulmark 5' x 8 ' enclosed trailer weighs 800 lbs. empty. Your boat trailer has to way that or more.Originally Posted by Dustoff '68

The jeep website claims the unlimited can tow 3500#, 2000# for the 2 door. X2 on adding electric brake controller. I think the tounge weight is only 350#, that's the part I would worry about the most. What's the tounge weight on the boat and trailer. Could it pull it, yes. Can it pull it safely, maybe. Hook it up and take it around the block and see how it pulls and stops. If it were me, I'd add a class III reciever, brake controller, stiffer rear springs.

I have a small, light weight, 4x8 single axle trailer and it weighs just under 500 pounds. Your trailer probably weighs atleast 800-1000 pounds. I would not think the boat+trailer, even dry, would fall into the towing capicity of the JK at 3500 lbs. Your trailer should have the weight printed on the sticker on it. My boat trailer did. By the way, my boat had a dry weight of 2000 pounds. Wet, including the trailer it was 3450 pounds.Originally Posted by ssmith
