Default I screwed it up ... clockspring and steering wheel lock.

So for the last few months, the cruise hasn't worked. I figured it was the clockspring, but oh well, it's just the cruise. Then the airbag light went off a few times and I decided it was time to fix it. Called Chrysler a few times, they won't warranty it because it's a LHD 08 not a RHD 08.

Anyhow, decided to pull the clockspring apart, and see if that was for sure the culprit, and see if there was anything I could do. I wasn't sure how to take it all apart, but after a little too long, the steering wheel was off and the clockspring ribbon was all over the inside of the jeep. Fast forward another hour and the ribbon is back in and everything is buttoned up. The cruise still doesn't work, but the ESP/BAS light is now on as well. I figure I just need a new cs.

So now I have two questions. How does the new cs come? I had a heck of a time trying to wind that ribbon back in the right way, and I think that is when I must have scratched it and killed the wire that makes the ESP/BAS light come on. Does it come pre spun and is pretty easy to put in, or should I just pony up and take it somewhere?

Also, once I got it all back together again, my steering wheel doesn't lock anymore when the key is out of the ignition. I'm not to worried about getting it working again, I just wanted to know if anybody knows what I might have done and if there is any danger of it locking up on me in the middle of the road 'cause I messed something up.

Mopar P/N 5156106AC

Put the new clock spring in (DONT REMOVE THE WHITE AND YELLOW TAB UNTIL THE STEERING WHEEL IS INSTALLED!!) , install turn and wiper arms, steering wheel, shroud and airbag.

Oh, and on my 09 the steering wheel never locked. Not sure if earlier models did.

whoa, the part you have there is a lot bigger than what I took out. I only took out the circle on the interior of the part you have. i didn't even look at how to get that whole piece out.

any idea on why the steering wheel won't lock now?

From what I understand only the 08 and earlier locked. I know before I took everything apart it locked, just not sure what I did to make that stop.

My '11 locked, my '12 locks too.

Steering lock is a safety measure. When parking on a decline, the steering is supposed to point to the sidewalk.
When parking on a incline, the steering is supposed to point away from the sidewalk.
If the vehicles starts rolling for some reason, the front wheels will be stopped by the sidewalk.

I know mine did before I messed with it. I was trying to loosen the bolt that holds the steering wheel, but it kept spinning the wheels, so i just took the key out, it locked and i was able to get the bolt out. Does anybody know how it locks. I'm just a little nervous about driving it because I don't know why it's not locking now and want to make sure that I didn't do something that might make it snag and lock up on me when it isn't supposed to.
