Putting the TC in 4Lo can be hard at times if sitting completely still. Did you try to put it in 4Lo while at a very slow roll (like barely moving) and with the transmission in N?

I don't see any video. Upload to YouTube and then simply paste a link here. I can't tell if this sounds like a shift cable bushing or not. To be clear you 1) you put it in 4Hi and had grinding, 2) put it back in 2WD, 3) a piece of plastic flew at you.....from where?
Currently the jeep will shift into 4Hi (and actually engages), N, and you can move the lever to 4Lo but it acts like it's still in N?

The TCases are tough. That grinding was simply the gears not meshing but did you try and force it? Best way is to shut the engine off in N and shift as it unloads all the gears. Resharp is asking some good questions but if it has a cable connection issue then it most likely will not shift into any range. Another thing is did you buckle up the cable at either end? If so get a new shifter cable. Do not force these things as thse cable connections are not that tough.

I have a captive washer on mine at that end so the bushing can literally disintegrate and it stay on and will still shift. At the TCase end I got sick of that stupid plastic thing and drilled the pin out of the lever. Cut an 1-1/4 x 5/16" Gr 8 bolt off on the unthreaded part, welded it in to the lever then installed the cable end with a 5/16" panel washer on either side and used a Nylok nut. The unthreaded protion of the bolt was to allow the cable end to swivel on a smooth surface not a thread. That is the last thing on the Jeep I have to worry about now. and yes - it came off in the bush and some haywire held it all in place to get back to town.
