Low on oil
Oddly enough my 2 dr JK just started consuming oil like mad at 49,000 miles. Is this the magic milage where they start consuming oil or what?
Got the same lame duck "oh it's just your PCV valve" story from the dealer. I don't buy it.
Starting thier official oil consumption test today.
They want me to wait until 1,000 miles to bring it back. I'm afriad I'l just about run dry by then.
Been adding a full quart per gas tank, about every 200 miles. By 1,000 miles it could be 5 quarts low, only holds 6 right?
Have you seen any change in your oil level yet?
Where did it start, above the hump in the dipstick?
I ask because I've heard some dealers will overfill the oil during these consumption tests so it shows normal (within hatch marks) after 1,000 miles and deny your claim.
Not trying to hi jack your thread, just curious what your experience with this oil consumption test has been like so far.

I have replaced the PCV valve myself... This did not help.
I did check and the dipstick when I picked t up and it was right at the full level.
They have me coming back in 500 miles. If it is low before that I'm supposed to take it in and let them check the oil level. I plan on checking it often. I do not want it to run low, it is still my engine.
Not sure why a dealer would try to fight this since they will make money if something needs repaired.
Well this is what Chrysler says. IMO, 1 qt per 1k is horribly unacceptable. It leaves them a big window to cover up sloppy building, tolerances, and quality control...
Ford, Chevy, Honda, etc., all have their oil burners. They all have similar oil burning limits before they will respond under warranty.
The difference now is we are all on forums where we see a concentration of oil burning posts. Most owners, on forums or not, don't complain or post about their vehicles that don't burn oil.
I've never had a vehicle in the past that burned oil. I knew some did, but had no way to judge how many outside my own circle of friends, (whose cars also didn't burn oil).
I'd like to see some statistics that would show how the JK compares to all the other brands out there.

The only real way to improve the numbers it to hand make and hand assemble the engines.
We can't afford that, and there would be a decades-long waiting list for them. (That has been the case in some countries even for really crappy cars.)
It's a direct result of mass production. They can't all be good. So there is a threshold for rejection.

I understand not all are going to be perfect. I still question why they do not take care of the ones that are not. If nothing more then to get people coming back the next time they buy a car. If I purchase something that does not work like I think it should and the company will not back that product I will not shop there again. I have not abused this vehicle. I have taken very good care of my jeep. This is not caused by abuse. I see that you have been a jeep person for a long time and know way more about jeeps then I do, but again no way should 1qt per 1000 mile be acceptable.
The next time they give you the 1 qt per 1000 miles is normal, run this piece of logic by them:
The 3.8L V6 engine holds 6 quarts of oil.
The owners manual recommends changing oil at 6000 miles.
It would be empty by then. How is that normal? How well is it going to run with no oil in it?

Great comment, I might have to try that. Though even the service manager thinks 1qt per 1000 miles is ridiculous. Will have to see how much I'm actually burning and if they stand behind their product.
