Lug nuts
What is the difference between Spline lug nuts vs. Acorn lug nuts. Is one better than the other? I am looking at replacing my stock lug nuts due to the thin metal sleeve breaking loose and turning slightly. I know that with the sleeve being loose probably won't hurt anything but its the whole piece of mind thing. If it looks like it is spinning and loose than I will be thinking about it not being tight all the time.
Spline nuts do not accept a 6 point or 12 point socket. They should be supplied with a socket, kind of like a key. It's closer to a locking lug with the exception that the splines are spaced evenly and anyone else who has a spline socket, can get them off as well. Sort of like an inverted torx driver.
Preference? Seems lines are cleaner in appearance. I would be nervous about stripping them personally. Just seems the surface area for the socket to grab is far less than a 6 point lug. MY humble opinion anyway. If you are looking for theft deterrent, go with a locking lug set. Just like a spline but keyed (staggered splines). Cost more if you tried to get the locking lug on every lug on each wheel.
