Default Malfunction indicator light

Okay, so my MIL light has been on lately. It comes on when I have the key in the ignition, and while the jeep has power to it. It rarely does it when the engine itself is on, but it has done it before.

Is this normal?

whenever MIL comes on, it's not normal.
I think you can get the code through the computer build-in, or just take it to dealer if it's under warranty.

At some point buy yourself a scan tool, it will pay for itself, takes the mystery out of things. As for the MIL Light, it can be anything from a loose gas cap to something more serious.

doesn't our JK come with a code reader along with the on board computer?

Yes it does , But ; To my knowledge, it does not always display a pending code or codes and does not give you the data found on some of the new scan tools. With all the computers and the new CAN BUS Systems in vehicles today, the scan tools can be very helpful including live data. They also came down in price a lot over the last year.

I have done the key cycle to check for any codes. Nothing was put up. For now I will just wait. Or go to the dealership.

Thanks guys. Anymore suggestions, please let me know!!

your warning light should always come on until the jeep is started, they all should come on, at least momentarily. It's called a bulb check and your owner's manual should describe this. You probably just haven't noticed it before.

The light stays on while the key is in, but the engine not on. It doesn't just stay on for a few minutes though.

Thanks for the help y'all!

Well of course it does. If the key is in the ON position, and the engine is NOT running, the MIL would come on because there is a malfunction (the engines isn't running).
