This is my first post here. I have been reading and enjoying the the forum a lot and thought this would make a good first post. . .

If you are going to be driving off road at all, then you have to go manual, no questions.

If you want to drive an automatic (and for some reason claim it is better off road????) then go ask the dealer for the 4x2 (yes, they actually make a 4x2 Wrangler!!!!!) The 4x2 will go better with your lattes, text messaging, in-car DVD players etc.

That being said, I learned to drive when I was 12 y.o. on a 1947 CJ-2A on my Grandfather's farm. I learned to drive off-road when I was 14 in a 1953 CJ-3B. I was taught how to shift, when to shift and why to shift, even learning the joys of downshifting in a transmission without a synchronizing gear. So with more than half of my life driving manual transmissions and having NEVER driven an automatic off-road, I can only say manual is the right way to drive. But, if Automatic gets you out on the trail, then go enjoy it!

Mine is an auto.

When I want to feel "in control" I just tune my stereo manually, screw the preset buttons.
