Manual Transmission Replacement
Has anyone had any problems with their tranny grinding and slipping? I took my Jk into the dealership friday for grinding from 1st to 2nd and they informed me that they have to replace my tranny.
They don't rebuild the wranglers.
My first response: Please tell me this is under warranty (22K on jeep)!!
They said it was.
Was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem...

I've never had it grind when going from first to second but sometimes theres this click noise/feel. Shifting from first to second is not very smooth anyway, not in JK's. I've had it pop out of second on me once or twice but thats when it's real cold out and I don't give it long to heat up, sometimes forget to plug in block heater

u say ur grinding and slipping? I've never heard of a manual tranny slipping. That would b the clutch having issues. ur grinding could be coming from a clutch issue as well. but if they are doing it under warranty u just sit back and watch. if they in fact replace ur tranny but u needed a clutch then u will eventually get brand new clutch only prepare for large headaches. it don't sound like they know wut the hell they are doing. If I was doing the repair I'd replace the clutch and inspect the transmission for metal shavings from that grinding u reported. If there was metal shavings I might charge DC for a new tranny bcuz all the bearings and gears could b damaged. f there wuz no evident tranny damage u'd keep that one.
R U sure ur depressing that left pedal completely?

100% sure about pressing the clutch in all the way. It has been doing this for a month or so. Strange part about it is that it mainly does it when it is cold in the mornings and then is better after you drive it a few minutes.
Anyways, I will take the new tranny and hope for the best.
I live in canada and ya seems that 1 to 2 shifts grind when it is cold i have replaced the fluid and it still does it to the point that it seems to last all day
I'm going to take it in and see what they say.

Hmm, let me know. I'm intersted in hearing what they say about this issue. My guess would be that they tell you it's normal, not that it is but it seems that alot of people have this same issue. They should have kept the NV 3550, that was a good trans, although a bit noisey.

it seems to be a cold weather thing aswell when it is warm like today2*C all is fine.
no matter what i do double clutch for 1 to 2 shift fast shift or slow shift it will grind till the drive train is op to a reasonable operating temperature
I will call them tomorrow and see what they say, but i'm willing to bet my drive train will be warmed up and they will not be able to replicate.
i've had the grinding a bit here and there on really cold days, it goes away once warmed up though.... i've noticed that when i start it right up and drive off on the really cold days and shift quickly from first to second it'll grind a bit till it warms up, but if i push the clutch nice and hard, wait a second before shifting and then shift nice and slow, it doesn't grind at all
as far as slipping, i plow with my rubicon that has a 4 inch lift and 35's and the stock 4:10 gears. i never had any issues with my clutch slipping until the other day when big snow storm came through and i had to plow non stop for hours, it was then that i felt my clutch start to slip... i can usually smell it getting hot by the time i'm done plowing my bigger lot that i do, but that time it was slipping and the pedal felt really mushy. in the end, i parked the jeep for a few hours, and then for the rest of the night and now the clutch acts completely normal... i do believe i have a bearing seizing up though because i can hear it squeal from time to time when pulling away from a stop... for now i'll leave it alone, but i know i'm going to have to change it eventually... i too wish they had kept the NV3550 it was a great tranny for me in my TJ i beat the piss out of that thing and never had a problem... this tranny however, i'm not too crazy about it. it'll do for now, but when the day comes to drop in a hemi, i'll have to upgrade the tranny then too.
