Mixed 5 year and 10 year coolant

Default Mixed 5 year and 10 year coolant

So last year my 2013 JK started getting low on coolant and I started looking on the internet and finding all these posts about HOAT and OAT and how not to trust the dealerships to know the difference. I pulled some out of my reservoir and compared it to all the posts online and was fairly certain that I needed 5 year coolant. I went into two dealerships to buy 5 year coolant and both insisted that I needed 10 year and were hesitant to sell me the 5-year coolant. When I explained the situation and how the online community found out the 2013 models were shipping with both neither dealership knew what I was talking about. Eventually I did end up buying the 10-year against my best judgement based on the fact that one of the dealerships was able to pull what mine originally shipped with.

Now here I am a year later and I happened to come across a service record when I had my water pump replaced after 6 months back in 2013 that I completely forgot about. On the invoice it clearly shows the part number for 5-year coolant. So now I'm wondering if when the dealership replaced the water pump they put 5 year coolant back instead of the 10-year and now I've had mixed coolant in my Jeep for a year now, and not sure what to do


Edit: I should mention that it was the same dealership that did the service that also ended up selling me the 10-year coolant.

From what I've read I doesn't take long for it to start gumming things up. Look in the overflow/reservoir tank for mucky sludgy stuff. I would flush it multiple times with distilled water just for piece of mind for myself.

I have a 2013 as well, and being right on the threshold of when this coolant change happened is really frustrating, especially since it seemed that the original 10yr from the factory was orange (just like the old 5yr was) and not purple like you'd buy to refill with. I ended up just doing a total flush so I was 100% certain WTF was in mine. That's a real dilemma you have since you have an invoice that shows the 5yr part number. Ugh. I think if it were me, I'd be flushing the entire thing, and while it was empty I'd probably pull off what I could easily and just check for any kind of signs of gumming. If I couldn't find any sign at all, would refill with the 10yr, throw salt over my shoulder, and hope for the best. If you do see any signs, then I think maybe you have a beef with the dealership, especially since you have that invoice with the 5yr part number on it.

Chrysler has made no bones about refuting these rumors. All 2013 Chrysler vehicles except a couple diesel ones had OAT. Though Chrysler says you can tell by color, the truth is that the lighting under which you view the coolant can affect one's perception of the actual color--I've seen videos of OAT where it had a definite pink appearance (thus one would think it was HOAT) under certain shop lights. Bottom line, if I were you I'd flush the coolant and put the proper stuff in there.

I've looked at this stuff ad nauseam in the past. I swear I found a place that said the OAT from the factory back in 2013 could be orange. It had to do with the purple additive not being used right away on the models on the cusp. That said, that's just what I ran across, and have not been in the game as long as Mark has been. I suctioned a decent bit out of my radiator cuz I agree, even when the purple stuff is in there, it looks orange. Drawing a good bit out and putting it in a clear plastic bottle and that was orange....no hint of purple whatsoever, and totally different than the purple OAT I bought from the dealer to refill. That said, I finally settled on complete confidence it was indeed OAT, but flushed the sucker anyhow.

Yes, you have OAT coolant. The bottle should clearly say 10year / 150k miles. If it says 5year / 100k miles, that is the HOAT, and you don't want it. When you buy it, you might run across 50/50 premix for ~$20/gallon, but you can also buy full strength, non-dilluted. I think I paid ~$24 or $26/gallon at my local dealer for full strength. Again, the jug will clearly state if it's 50/50 prediluted. Attached is an example of the premixed stuff -



Edit - note that when opening your rad cap and looking in, it will probably look orange. The purple is an additive, and it looks different in different lighting. Unless you have had some sort of work done to your cooling system, there is no reason to believe that what is in there is anything other than OAT.
