Navigation Map Update......Is it worth it?
Hi Everybody,
I got a letter in the mail stating that it might be time to download a map update to Navigation system on my 08 Rubi. The letter state the price is $199 plus taxes. I am just curious from those of you who have paid for this update if it is worth the price or not? I use my Nav more to look at POI's and water, parks, etc - than for driving directions. I am just wondering how much more is on the 2011 update than is on my 08 version.
I have no problem paying for the update as I plan on keeping my Rubi for a long time. I guess I am just wondering if its worth it to do it now 2.5 yrs after buying mine.....versus holding off for another year or so until mine current version is really obsolete (as thus far everything I have needed to see or find.....I have been able to find on the version I have). Just wondering if there is something I am missing here - that I should want the update for - that I don't currently have on the 08 version I am running.
Thanks for your help and advice.

For $200 I can buy a heck of a stand alone GPS... with the latest maps and usually with next year's update for free.... The tend to work better than the chrysler integrated one too.
If they'd say "It's time to update your GPS, it will be $49" you wouldn't even be asking the question here. You'd just be paying it. At the price they ask you really need to decide if it's worth it.

Just for reference. I have a 2008 Nitro and have the NAV system. I also got the letter to update but it really has been fine up till now and I also see the $200.00 cost for a CD to load in for a update on the extreme side. I have a portable GPS for the Jeep so if I need it, I can switch. Just my 2 cents.

It's only really necessary if there has been a lot of new roads &/or housing developments or freeway upgrades in the area you're most likely to be driving around, otherwise you'll find very little reason to pay the $200. I haven't updated my '08 maps yet & it was only just recently when I was on a long road trip that I found myself on a new freeway offramp that the map was showing as a field, but other than that it's been all good. Spend the $200 on some worthy mods instead...

Would it be possible to find a copy of the disc cheaper, elsewhere?
Just curious -
My best friend has an 07 Infiniti FX, she just got an updated Nav disc off somebody who was crackin them for like $75 instead of the $200... works just fine...

I would say not worth it. It would be much cheaper to just go buy a Garmin or something like that.
It all depends on where you drive. I have not updated my maps and on one route I travel a lot I am always off the map on a new road. It keeps telling me to turn I just ignore it and eventually we are back on the road again. I know the area that I am going through so no need to pay for an update.

When i contacted the navigation company, they would NOT provide me with any detailed info and I was told that the maps in my geographic area may not have been updated. They suggested that i go to my local dealership and test it out there. OK, so I stopped by the dealership. "You want us to do WHAT!" We don't have a disc just sitting around, nor do we have time for you to test this out. I don't know where the manufacturer came up with that idea. I laughed and figured "Forget that upgrade".
I am not going to throw $200.00.
