Which Oil Filter?
The clatter is a rapid knocking sound for about the first second or two upon start-up after the Jeep sits for several hours. Apparently the anti-drain back valve on many (or all?) of the Mobile filters isn't working well which creates a void at start-up. When I pulled the Mobile filter, barely a drop of oil came out, which confirms that it was empty. Everytime I've pulled the MOPAR filter oil spills out big time. Since going back to the MOPAR unit I am clatter free.
I've have used Mobile filters in other applications as well with no issues, not sure what the deal is with the JK filters, but a lot of people have had the problem. Oddly some claim no issues though.

I received my first oil change from my dealer and guess what? Engine knocking on start up. I’m not sure if the drain valve is defective on the Mopar oil filter but I thought I would try and change my own oil with an aftermarket Fram full flow oil filter. I will post my findings tomorrow.
How do I know its oil related? For all you engine knockers out there try this after the vehicle has sat for 10 hours or more. Turn the ignition key until all gauge cluster lights are illuminated. Take note of your oil pressure light. When they all turn off start the vehicle and watch the gauge cluster. If the oil pressure light turns on while you hear the knock (2 sec or so) and turns off at the same time the engine knock disappears then you know its oil related (Oil filter empty). Hopefully its not an issue with the oil pump. I’ see what happens when I start the Jeep in the morning.

I figured mine was lack of oil related when I pulled the filter (Mobile 1) and there was no oil in it. So far good luck with the Mopar filters though. It is an interesting issue to track though.
WIX is quality all day long. check out bobistheoilguy.com or something like that. People have cut them apart and found shotty material and most were cheaply made but WIX was the best all the time in every test. I buy wix at O'Reilly Auto Parts
I'll never go near a Fram and you won't see me going the Mobile1 route again.
I've never had the first hint of a problem from Purolator PureOne filters, but they can be pricey.
Going to a Motorcraft immediately eliminated the clatter that was experienced by using a Mobile1.

Used the Mobil 1 filter in the JK. Using this, I found the clatter at startup. Usually the clatter was after the JK sat for a good while.
I've used Mobil 1 oil filters sucessfully in other vehicles without issue. Stange huh. Now the JK gets Napa Gold.
BTW still using the Mobil 1 oil, (5w-20).

I did not even know there was a problem with clatter?chatter? issue
As I said before I used a WIX with no issues, are people getting this due to the lack of oil retained in the filter as most are designed to do to curb dry start ups?

I only drive my Jeep on the weekends so any filter with a weak or leaking anti-drainback valve would let the oil leak out of the filter. The Motorcraft filter has never given a hint of clatter/dry start knock.

I have had the clatter with Purolator/Mopar/Walmart brand. I also switched to the Motorcraft 910 and the problem clatter has been gone ever since. Don't really like running a Ford filter but it is the only one that has worked for me every time.

Since I work on all models, plus gas and diesel engines. I find this entertaining about filters. I have seen so many AC, Napa Gold filters come apart on diesel engines that I could and would never recommend them to anyone. As to th Fram bashing I see, I have changed oil thousands of times on customers vehicles and cut hundreds apart and never seen a problem with them. The person that mentioned the filters splitting did occur with a few filters I checked some time back. Come to find out they were counterfit and made in China. You have to watch who your supplier is. I have not seen a problem with Wally World filters and that amazes me. Mobil 1 and AC filters are dry alot of times when removed after they have been run to the next oil change, thus no filtering ever occurred. Best to always check your oil filter to make sure it is getting hot after you have changed the oil. My favorite filters are Fleetguard, Wix, Purolator and Luberfiner. Fleetguard and Luberfiner are used by many fleets around the country. A little harder to locate but excellent filters.
