My guess is it wrong. I would go back and double check. There is other info on htis site about different filters. I believe that you can actually get a larger filter.

I used a Carquest Filter (made by Wix) that was identical in size to the stock.

Some aftermarket filters differ in size from factory filters. If it will fit the threads on the filter boss and the o-ring will seal against the boss it will work. That is, of course as long as there's room around the outside of the filter for it to fit.

Sounds like you may have the wrong filter if there is a signifcant difference. Did you use the reference book at the auto parts store to find the part #? The one oil change I did myself the filter I bought was identical to the MOPAR one.

Default check the box

I've puchased oil filters at the world's largest retailer that were in the wrong box, another time I got a used filter that had been drained and returned in the new box. YES I open each and every one now and CHECK while I'm in the store. When W-M gets screwed I think they must just stick it on the shelf and pass the screwing on to someone else..... Ya gotta laugh!

I agree that you may have picked up the wrong size filter.
As far as using a different size filter than what is recommended by OEM, be careful. The OEM filter has been spec'd to the engine. Although some oversized filters will fit, and some posters have recommended using these, you should keep in mind the difference in bypass spring pressures as this may dramatically affect the way your vehicle's oiling system operates. Check with the manufacturer for exact bypass spring specs.

I just now saw you posted the new filter was SMALLER than original. I thought it was the other way around when I first replied. Yeah, sounds like you got the wrong filter.

Just to suggest a possibility I didn't see in the thread, yet: Is the old filter stock? Is it possible that you're working on a vehicle where someone may have installed a larger filter, and now you're getting the "correct" (stock) size filter? I'm asking because the filter that comes stock is pretty small.

I use Mobil oil filter M1-209. It is slightly larger than the stock one-if they made a larger one I would run that.
