Default "Oil" Message on 2011

Today I noticed the message "Oil" as I parked my Jeep. It only has 3500 miles on it, and I had changed my oil at 2500 miles. I immediately checked my oil, it was fine and still looked as clean as the day I put it in. A few hours later I went back out to my Jeep to drive home and the message was gone. I am a bit confused because it did not read "Change Oil", instead it just read "Oil". I agree...my jeep has oil, why does my dash need to tell me that?

Okay, does anyone know what this message could possibly mean?

Welcome to the forum. Seems strange, as far as I know you should only have two "OIL" related messages, change oil and hot oil (for auto trans.).

Are you sure it only only said "OIL"? I have to wonder why it would have gone away without any action.

When you did your change back at 2500mi, did you do the oil change indicator (OCI) reset dance? Turn key to on (don't start) and depress gas pedal three times within 10 seconds. That should be done at each oil drain regardless of notification. The OCI is based on duty cycle and does not know if you actually change your oil unless you do the reset dance.

I'd report it to my dealer and wait until the next OCI message; probably about another 3500 miles for you.

Actually he has a valid question because getting a "OIL" only message is unusual. I'd say thanks for your input but judging by your 5 posts you're more troll than helpful.

I did read the owners manual, even watched the video...I you read my post you will see that I made it clear that the message was NOT "Change Oil", instead it just read "Oil"...I looked at the dash readout for about 15 seconds before I shut my Jeep off...That is not covered in the owner's manual!!!

If the light went off after you parked it, it's the hot oil light. If it was the change oil light it would stay on the column until you complete the "dance" to turn it off. Sounds like you got a little hot on that drive home.

Thanks for the reply! I did not do the "dance", and I have the manual transmission, so I doubt it was a "Hot Oil" message either. I will monitor it over the next few days and see what happens...My guess is that it is the "Change Oil" message, but somehow the computer was stuck in a loop or something and just showed "Oil", never cycling back to "Change". Okay...thanks for the advice!!!

Possibly...Do you think that is possible with a manual tranny? All I did was about 30 miles of highway driving...in 6th gear the entire time...about 70 degrees outside. Wow, if that overheats my tranny, I'm in trouble when summer gets here

I'm pretty sure only the auto have the hot oil warning.

Could you have reset it on accident? I know sometimes "old habit" I use to pump the gas pedal before starting it. Just a thought.

If you did have a light come on you might be able to see if there are any trouble codes that were thrown. Im not sure the dance to get them to display but if there was an issues you might see the code for it and can look it up.

Someone on here knows how to do the above.

Hope that helps!
