Paint Bubbling from rust forming
I tried searching to see if anyone else was having this problem, but didn't find much. I have an 07 2Dr. and the paint is starting to bubble from rust forming. I was wash my jeep at least once a week, cause I live in Nebraska where they throw salt and gravel all over the roads in the winter, and it's kept in a garage. Why is my paint doing this after not even 5 years? Anyone else having this problem? Whats more baffling is that where it's bubbling (door hinges) there are no chips pr cracks in the paint.

:wha t?:
Mine did the same thing.. wash my jeep weekly in winter.. twice weekly in summer.. use the best waxes-- have running boards and flaps since day 1.
Dealership will not cover past 3/36 and even then it's iffy.. I have 25k on mine now--
2007 sahara 4 door.
The rust thru warranty is body panel, this isn't considered a body panel.
Until jeep fixes this hinge issue and adds a diesel.. I'm keeping my 2007. my hinges.. look pretty bad =)

that is your aluminum door hinges corroding under the paint film. This is caused by dissimilar metals ( aluminum hinge and steel outer door skin) in contact thru the the original thin primer coat, or moisture causing corrosion on the surface of the aluminum hinge, causing the paint film to bubble and lift. If your jeep doesn't have running boards or mudflaps, sand and gravel thrown up by the tires will chip and etch the hinges, since they stick out from the sides. This will allow moisture and corrosion to gain a foothold on the hinges.

If I was repairing this in the shop I would remove the hinges, paint the hinge outline on the outer door skin with a nice thick coat of paint. Then I would disaassemble the hinges, and sandblast them completely, getting rid of the corrosion powder and scale. Rather than auto primer I would use zinc chromate primer on each hinge. Then a top quality automotive primer and a complete refinish of the hinges. Before assembling the hinge halves i would add a thin nylon washer so the rubbing of the hinge halves at the hinge joint wouldn't break the paint film. Involved but effective.
I have the same issue along with some white spots near the windshield that appears to be problems with the clear coat. My dealer took some photos to send to Chrysler for approval to repair this issue. Will update when the dealer let's me know.
Add mine to the list. Dealer stated it wasn't covered under factory warranty? (only 32k on Jeep). But, they would cover it under the extended warranty I purchased. Ordered new ones. Not sure if they come raw and will have to be repainted, or they get them painted.
