Power steering fluid?

What kind does the JK use? Is it ATF 4. If so can I just get any ATF 4?

ronjenx Jul 12, 2010 01:57 PM

Yes, any ATF+4® will work.

Thanks. Will I need an alignment after swapping boxes?

Dunno haven't done it yet. Will let ya know tomorrow!

Also is the pitman arm keyed or do I have to pay attention to where it mounts on the splines of the sector shaft?

The instructions in the service manual are vague. It doesn't say much about indexing the input or output shafts. No mention of a master spline.

Center the steering system
Index both shafts on the old one before anything is disconnected.

Make sure the new box is centered.

See if it looks like the splines line up the same on both boxes.

It probably isn't too critical as long as you get equal turns left and right after all is done.

Thanks!

Do you need torque values?

The bolts that hold the box are 80 ft lbs. and the sector shaft nut is 185? Any others?

Install a new coupler pinch bolt and tighten to 36 ft. lbs.

Install power steering hoses/tubes to steering gear and tighten to 27 ft. lbs..
