Problems in Reverse
Does anyone with a manual tranny (a 2009 X) have/see this type of problem/situation when using reverse (see below)?
1) When using reverse in 2WD either up a fairly steep slope or when pulling (or in this case PUSHING) a small trailer up even a moderate slope, the Jeep jerks/surges forwards/backwards quite violently...almost as if a gear is sliding in/out or there is some play in the drivetrain moving forwards/backwards. I think this happens in 4WD High as well, but I have never tried this combination.
2) When using reverse in 4WD low and trying to back up even a mild to moderate slope, the same thing happens...the Jeep jerks/surges backwards/forwards rather violently.
In both cases, you have to ride the clutch VERY aggressively to prevent the surging.
Perhaps related, in forward gears, I do notice that "sloppy" shifting also seems to result in a lot of drivetrain noise...something underneath is moving around quite noticeably.
Any thoughts? Perhaps this is all normal for these 4WD tubs?

My 2008 JKU Rubicon 6 speed does the same thing plus more. Not only is there too much gear train slop, in 1st gear jumps out of gear(violently) and the transmission gear whine. I've checked the rear diff. Backlash is perfect and changed to all synthetic oils in the drivetrain. A Chrysler mechanic friend of mine says there's an update for the shifter rails. Maybe it's time to go visit the dealer.
Sounds like clutch chatter.
If the tranny is popping out of gear, it'll jump right out into neutral, or a false-neutral. If it's jumping in and out of gear, it'll make a LOT of racket.
Mine will chatter the clutch at times - usually if I am trying to aggressively get out into traffic and it's the first thing in the morning. I 'believe' chatter is typically from glazing on the clutch lining or pressure plate, or warping of either.
I also have a LOT of driveline slop. It's been that way since I bought it three or four years ago, and hasn't increased. It's annoying for sure. Two things to make note of -- when running aftermarket tuning (Diablo Predator in my case), it cleans up the throttle response and makes shifting smoothly a LOT easier. Secondly, my uncle has a 6-spped '08 Rubicon, and the driveline is very tight. Very little slop.
Haven't figured out exactly where the slop in the driveline lives. I think it's slop of the backlash and spiders in the differentials, but am not sure. Example: Youtube vid
