Hi Everyone,

I recently purchased a 2012 JKU Sahara, manual tranny, no mods to anything mechanical. I have an intermittent rattle while idling and 80% of the time it continues rattling while in first and second gear. I first noticed it about 2 1/2 months ago and I have noticed that if I keep my rpm's up (almost up to 2000) there will not be a rattle while accelerating. I was thinking since I am used to driving smaller sportier types of vehicles and if i keep the rpm's up the rattle goes away maybe I just need to accept that the Jeep is more of a truck than a car and this is what the manual tranny's are like.

My concern is the rattle while idling, if I tap the gas while idling the rattle usually goes away.

So my questions are:

Is it just me being a newbie?

What do you guys think it might be?

I am going to call the dealership and get them to take a look but I would like to go in with some ideas and I don't have the experience to feel confident enough to know if they are blowing smoke.

Thanks for any help

Edit: not sure why my spell check only corrected accelerating in my post and not in the title?

Check your heat shields in tight spaces around the exhaust pipe. They are pretty flimsy since all they do is block heat. If they are loose or too close to another part they can rattle. Low rpms , lower frequency, so things move more.

I too have a 6 speed JKU Rubicon (2012) that has massive amounts of noise coming from the manual transmission. I've never felt so let down by a manual transmission vehicle... and this is my third JKU (08, 11, and now 12) - and all three were manual transmissions.

I'm in the process of getting my JKUR replaced with at 2013 automatic... and it makes me sad. I just can't risk getting another crap transmission from Chrysler.

Mine shifts fine. It makes similar noises to the video you posted while in neutral/parked - but only when under load (the AC compressor kicks on).

To each their own on the 'not worth the effort' thing. I spent good money on my JKUR. There is no way I'd just be ok with a dealership screwing me around. This is obviously *not* a normal noise. If it's completely normal, have your dealership fire up another manual transmission Wrangler to show you how they sound exactly like yours (they won't sound like yours).

By the way, Chrysler replacing my Jeep works out in my favor. I end up with a 2013 JKU Rubicon with similar specs, auto transmission this time, that is worth a little more (model year price increase). I do pay for *some* of the depreciation as well as the difference for the model year increase and options that I picked, but I'm still going to end up with a 2013 JKU Rubicon that has already been paid down a year. I don't have to refinance or any of that mess - it's a substitution of collateral. Same terms, same everything. Same exact loan.

If you're fine with a brand new vehicle sounding like that then that's your choice. I'm obviously not.

Best of luck.

Also, I purchased a lifetime warranty with my 2012 JKU Rubicon. I couldn't get them to help me at all. I took it in probably 10 times. The mechanics told me it was not normal, but they said their area Chrysler Service Advisor (Jack Brinks) wouldn't let them do anything about it.

I couldn't get them to help me under warranty at 3,000 miles. I couldn't get them to help me under warranty at 6,000 miles. I couldn't get them to help me under warranty at 10,000 miles. If they won't help at such low mileage on a *brand*new* vehicle, they're not going to help outside of the factory warranty IMHO. That lifetime warranty was an *enormous* waste of money on my part. Never again.

Default i understand what your sayin

Chrysler avoids warrenty crap I know ! I have lifetime too. if ya cant get them to fix stuff now what makes ya think theyl fix it 5 years from now or ten years lol
however I just don't get your reasoning with going back for another jeep its like saying I think they make junk but I love junk so ill put my hard erned money into another junk that cost more than the last junk I bought ! you should learn from the mistake the 13s have issues as well what then ???
mine dosent sound as bad as the video and yeh I guess im not gona knit pick it as long as it starts up daily and gets me where im going ! I traded my 11 for the 12 im not gona do this again for a 13 when I know dam well the 13 is no better! as far as shifter / and automatic I prefer shifter that's just me id rather have a noisey manual than a quiet auto but that's me . and if I were to fight over the problems with chrysler , id be getting my cash back not another jeep to do the same crap again
you should have filed the lemon law started arbitration and demanded full refund I did that 20 years ago no depreciation and any add ons I got reimbursed I went to another brand. not buyinto the ol let us sell you another newer one at your expence, you may find this as a great deal but I don't call that a great deal I find it the same as if I sold you swamp land you hated it , so you bitched and now your willing to buy a bigger parcel only a different location ! seems a bit foolish
im keepin the jeep I have and if it breaks down they will fix it more than likely rather than fight over whats normal and what bugs me . lets face it I payed 30 thousand bucks I still owe too ! but why would I fight for another one when the 13 is the same I like the one I have so im gona enjoy it till it breaks
but goin through it with a fine tooth comb and having all the trips documented I would seriously have got my money and be away from jeep seeing you wernt satisfied
ill bet youl have different issue with the 13 is all so nothing gained in the end cept a years worth of high registration fees insurance for 13 the cost of upgrades

! see you at the service waiting room

this guys video is similar to the noise im tracking any idea its not throw out berring it only does it on unlevel surface and not all the time ?????
