Default Red Battery Light

So I'm in Iowa and it's been pretty cold out lately. I get off work late at night and my temp gauge said it was 19 degrees outside. I hit the store before I come home and when I go to leave the parking light, I didn't give it enough gas or something but my radio went out for a second and came back on but then I heard a chime and the red battery light was on. This was the first time it's ever come on.

I get on the interstate and that's when I realize my lights aren't as bright as they usually are. I always have my fog lights on and that's when I found out the fogs aren't coming on. I start to wonder if my rear parking lights are even on so others won't crash into me. I have to go a few miles to a gas station to check things out. I first get out and see all my parking lights are on as well as my headlights, but not fogs. The red battery light is still illuminated. I decide to "reset" things so I turn off the engine and turn it back on. This time fogs work again and the battery light is gone.

I don't think the battery was really that low but the computer thought it was when I had that rough start and killed the radio. I'm talking to you Chrysler, where is my battery gauge!?! Either way I thought it was cool that when the Jeep thinks the battery is low it turns off all unneeded functions, like the fog lights for example. LOL when this happened I said, "Captain, shields and life support are still operational."

But what gets me is that I had to "reset" my Jeep to get the battery light to go away. Since this was the first time it's ever happened I'm wondering if it will later resume regular functions without the Jeep being "reset". Anybody know the answer to this riddle?

I have had a similar problem but when winching lots. The light resets it self after about an hour or so if everything is ok according to the computer.

I use this http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=92571 when i am wheelin or guessing about the bettery or altneter level.

Mine was doing something similar the other day after I installed my CB (but the interior light was on for most of the install) and I noticed my low voltage cut off was blinking on my Switch Location Kit meaning my voltage was below 11.8 volts. It fixed itself after driving about 15 minutes.

The more I learn about the JK the more I realize how many functions Chrysler put in it. So it really started killing nonessential gear to keep itself alive? I can't wait to see what is next.

Yeah I thought that was pretty clever. But the heater still worked and so did the radio. I can understand the heater working but the radio? I still turned everything off and froze my ass off till I had a chance to stop to check things out.

Off topic but something else I never knew till yesterday...the big handle on the driver's seat is used to move the seat up and down! Just pump the handle up and down to move the seat. I never knew that! I guess I could have read the owner's manual but that's about as much fun as reading a phone book!

I hate the fact that we have to buy something to tell what our battery level is at since there's no gauge on the dash, but that thing looks pretty handy! I love Harbor Freight and it's cheap too! Thanks, I'll pick one up next time I'm there, looks like a nice thing to have on hand.
