Default Regarding The Steering Column Clunk

I have read the write up ref to the steering column clunk, however would like to ask the "older-wiser" members of the forum whether this issue is a safety issue and letting it clunk would either become worse or even detrimental to the steering wheel column components. (that being said, due to having in mind that through the dealership such an issue is considered normal)

I believe it's a simple fix. If you look under your hood there is a bushing that slides down the shaft. It just needs slid back up the shaft. That is one issue, I think the other is a lubrication thing! Try a search! I have seen threads on it

It's not a safety issue by any means. Your intermediate steering shaft is able to compress and extend due to a slip yoke type design. The problem is that they don't put enough lubrication in there from the factory and it will bind slightly and then exdtend or compress. This momentary bind is what causes the clunking sound.

I tried lubricating it to no avail. Eventually I just replaced the intermidiate steering shaft, that did the trick.

had the intermediate shaft replaced last summer and no problem afterwards but teh past couple of weeks i have noticed it has returned. It does worsen as i drive, i dont think it is dangerous but quite annoying. there are threads out there about packing the boot with 5th wheel grease. I have the dealer receipt if you want me to scan a copy and you can bring it to your dealer. It is a warranty job. if so PM me

I couldn't get the dealer to replace mine, so when it comes back I will just have to buy a new one. You can get em for like $60 at moparpartsamerica.com. Looks like I will be spending $60 a year.

I think they use the same vender as GM does for their Silverados. I have had the shaft replaced once but suspect it will go on untill there is a tsb fix.

I had the Silverado deal, too, but mine was fixed and went on another 100k without returning.

It is just starting to show up on my Jeep.
