Project-JK write up on tranny service. I'm guessing it's the 4 bolts he is using that universal joint on?

I got them out with a 1/4 drive universal.
Getting them back in wasn't so easy. I could not get one of them to catch the thread. I had to loosen and move the crossover pipe to chase the thread with a tap.

This is what will make it easier next time. The allen wrench will allow the screw to align with threaded hole without having to loosen the pipe. It requires less room than a standard universal.

That's a good article. I use a peristatic pump discarded from a kidney machine to remove tranny fluid via the dipstick. That's thinking with your dipstick!

The article is good but has one common mistake. It instructs removing 1/3 of the fluid (3 of 9 quarts), replacing the 1/3 with fresh fluid and repeating twice (over a two week period to allow for mixing). It says this will exchange the original 9 quarts with 9 fresh quarts.

At best that procedure will remove only 70% of the original fluid.

If you remove 1/3 with each drain and fill, it takes 7 drain & fills to theoretically replace about 94% of the original. ((2/3)^7)

It would take 12 of these 1/3 drain & fills to get over 99%. Serial dilutions never get to 100%.

Why not just drain the torque converter, too? Then you're talkin close to 100% fluid change.
