Default Rust paranoia!

The other day I happened to look under my 2007 JK. I noticed that some of the components around the brake assembly had this oxidation look to them, including the drive shaft. Am I just being paranoid? This car was built in Feb. 07, isn't it a little early for something like that to happen? I don't know... maybe these parts are not "treated". Any ideas?

Yes, you are being paranoid. All vehicles do this.

Wow thanks! That's interesting, I owned a 1999 volkswagen and it never had that problem.

For some reason many of the outer axle housing parts are unpainted cast iron. I guess they don't bother painting them because it saves time and money, and it would actually take 50+ years for them to rust through.

All un coated metal will oxidize in time but the rate is very slow unless your wheeling in the Ocean.

50 years? Guess I'll have to save for a new Jeep when I'm 93.

The last time I was under the JK mounting my bumper, I saw some nuts-n-bolts that were rusting and decided to do a little preventive maintenance. I cleaned off the rust and brushed-on some black rustolium paint. I even hit all the newly installed nuts-n-bolts to.

Might as well as long as your down there!
