Soft Top or Hard Top?
I could never get my hard top to stop leaking, so I sold it for $1700 and never looked back. With that said... I HATE the softop for ONLY one reason (actually my wife hates it so in order to save the peace - I have to hate it too) and that's getting into the rear cargo area with groceries and such. It's a PITA to get anything of substantial size back there without unzipping/removing the rear window. If you think tolerating this wouldn't be an issue for you, then go softop. Since I sold my hardtop for $1700, I have enough money to buy one of those fancy softops with the hardtop style side and rear windows. Best of both worlds.
I thought I wanted a soft top until I test drove both. The hard top is simply more quiet. Since mine is a DD, I wanted the quieter top. I like having conversations with people in my vehicle at highway speeds without raising my voice.

Hard top all the way, although I'm topless 90% of the time with a spiderweb or similar screen to cut the sun. I can have my hard top off/on in a matter of minutes with my lift if need be. The ONLY time I find a soft top useful is when going on a long trip (4 days+) with questionable weather and you might want to have the top down at the destination. I could never justify spending much on a soft top for that use. I did buy one cheap on craigslist for $150 one time, used it for a trip, then flipped out of it when back. There are a lot of jeeps here in DFW....some of which are soft tops. Hardly EVER see any of them with a soft top down. LOL.
I run both now. Originally my Jeep only came with the hard top. It worked but it was a pain to remove the hard top completely. Picked up a complete used soft top for $300 online. So now I run my soft top from April-October and then about mid October swap the hard top on until the next spring. If I could only have one, it would be the soft top.
My Jeep came with a hard top and a Bestop Trektop (frameless). For the first 2 years I would run the trektop from April until September ish. Taking the hardtop on and off was a PITA. My main issue was that I didn't really have a place to store the hard top for the summer, so I sold it last spring. I didn't trust the trektop during a New England winter since it had no frame and was pretty thin, so with the money from the hardtop I bought a barely used Bestop Supertop off craigslist. It came with the frame and everything I needed plus had the twill material which was a huge plus for me. It was the best decision I ever made. It's so much better to just be able to take it down when spring comes. It is annoying with the back window and groceries I'll have to admit, and it's louder than a hard top, but in my opinion it's so much easier to have one top. I still have my trektop as a backup in case something happens to this (gets slashed or something). I don't think I'd ever go back to hard top. Get the twill if you go with a soft top though. I think it looks much nicer and holds up better than the normal material.
