Default Squeak when turning left. Ideas?

Hey guys.

Ran some searches - I found one thread similar to my issue, but it seemed to be unresolved.

I am getting a rotational squeak when turning left at parking lot speeds. Actually sounds faintly like a small dog yelping. It is really only noticeable turning left. Cant identify which end it's coming from. I'm at 94-ish thousand miles on my basically stock 2dr, 6spd, 4.10'd Sahara.

Rear brakes were done about 30k ago. Fronts... stock!

Anyone have thoughts on what to check?

My first suspicion is brakes. From there, I'm hoping it ain't so, but seals, bearings, or front u-joints.

Thanks,
-marc

Dern'it.

My passenger side u-joint is toast. One of the bearings is totally blown out and there is a ton of play in the joint. It seems to have been like this for a while. Its all rusted up.

I hate to ask this question -- but how much free play is acceptable in the axles outer bearing? With the joint blown out like this, my axle moves up and down about 1/8", when I spin the tire with the steering to the left.

I've done u-joints in a rear wheel drive car, but never on a front axle. if anyones got the time and or patience, mind giving me a rundown as to what I'm looking at, parts and labor wise? I'd like to do myself, if possible. I have an intermediate set of tools handy.

Thanks!

Thank you!!

I picked myself up a u-joint... nice and cheap.

I got things torn down, but the old joint is seemingly bonded to the axles. Even the c-clips. (only got one busted out).

I'm about to give up and see if anyone local has an axle they want to sell...

(anyone in Mass reading this, please let me know if you got one!) Off to the New England forum..
