start in gear?
It's interesting, if you watch the introduction video for the JK ride on the Rubicon Trail, Mark Smith "Mr. Rubicon Trail", tells the drivers to exactly that.
He said to put your feet on the floor and leave them there. Start it in gear and let the Jeep do the work.

(It's about 3 and half minutes into the video before he talks about it.)

Wouldnt you think that would put alot of stress on parts?
I would think so but I've never had a Jeep and I don't have my JK yet. To be honest I was going to try it once I got the Jeep just to do it. :toung:
I would think it will lurch and as you say put a lot of stress on the starter and such.
I have done something similar with my old VW's when the clutch cable breaks and you are away from home. Put it in gear, start the car and hope you don't hit red lights.
I'm guessing the ultra-low gearing in the Jeep makes the start-up a little smoother?

I tried this with mine yesterday. Started it in 4Lo on a STEEP uphill incline, still was able to start without any difficulty.
Regarding the locking diffs, when activated, both diff lights on the dash started flashing, but it seemed the lockers wouldn't engage until the vehicle actually started moving, then they stopped flashing and stayed steady ON. I assume this is normal. I could NOT get them to lock on the same stretch of mountain in 4Hi, nor did I expect them to...

When you are crawling over rocks, and you stall in a tough spot (where you don't want to roll backwards at all), you can start in gear rather than try and juggle the clutch, brakes, and throttle.
Some vehicles have an ignition overide (from the factory) so that you can use the torque of the starter to drive you over an obstacle by putting it in gear and driving along with the starter.

"keepyourfreakinfootofftheclutch". I understand why some of the East coast folks are not familiar with using this tactic,
But in Red Rock country, it's a nice feature.

it allows you to use the clutch, thats my point.
he said this..
with hand throttle you dont need your foot on the gas, Your feet are on the brake and clutch, your finger is on the hand throttle bring the rpms up so you dont go backwards..
its also the ghetto cruise control on the highway..
