Default Starting noise?

Hi all, my 2009 jk has about 4800 miles on it. This weird noise just started the other day and i tried searching on here to find anyone else having this problem and couldn't find anything. It has been like 10 degrees here in the morning and it only seems to do it when it's parked over night. When i start it in the morning with the clutch in of course as it's a 6 speed, it makes this weird wining or kind of grinding noise. It only does it when i start it up the first time in the morning. Any other time i start it or push the clutch in the rest of they day it's fine. It drives great and shifts fine. It's not knocking or anything just makes that wierd noise. I can't think of what it could be. Anyone else have this noise or could know what it could be? Thanks all

Ya...

-30c here today and after being plugged in all night, it let out a banshee noise that would scare the dead on start up...just for a second though. Hope it's OK...can't do much more than plug it in and use the recommened oil...

Mine's the same... been about zero degrees overnight for several days, and the first startup in the morning makes the noise for just a second after startup. Almost sounds like the starter is taking a moment to disengage. I'm sure something is just sticky from frost and then breaks free, no worries.

mine has been doing the same, its a quick grind like the starters going too long. Mine is an automagic and it does this in park. I know for sure it happens in 4x4, havnt had the mind to try it in just 2wd.

Mine does this, too. I'd sure like to know what it is. It sounds like metal-on-metal where there should be lubrication, but it's over in a flash.

Mine sounds like I'm spinning a main bearing. Not the starter for sure...held my hand on it while a buddy turned it over and it was ok. No valve clacking either. The noise came from the forward part of the engine. Going to try to listen to the belt driven stuff on the next cold start...the mystery continues...???

I think I read somewhere that a similar sound occurred coming from the AC compressor.

When you start up, is your heater fan turned off? (IIRC, even if you do not have AC selected, it automatically comes on whenever you dial for defrost)

Yup,

I turn the heater fan off before a cold start. It makes a nasty sound in very cold weather. Last winter the fan stopped all together for a bit in cold weather. I'll check the AC pump for noise on start up...makes sense...

That's actually what I've suspected for the past few weeks. So, I've kept an eye on the AC control panel to make sure it's not in a mode that the compressor would run. Sometimes still get the noise.
