Stock JK TechBulletin board forum regarding issues with OE (original equipment) components of the Jeep JK Wrangler (Rubicon, Sahara, Unlimited and X) such as factory suspension parts, engine, transmission, body parts, interior fixtures and the on-board computer.
For some reason, when I'm driving straight down the road, my steering wheel is about 15-20 degrees to the left (see picture). The alignment is good. Any idea what would cause this? I'm fairly certain the steering wheel has never been off. and how would you fix it? Disconnect the battery, unbolt the steering wheel, adjust the wheel a few splines to the right?
You need to adjust the drag link. Put a piece of painters tape on the top center of the wheel, then loosen the nuts on the adjustment sleeve on the drag link, and gently turn the adjuster and keep checking the tape to see if the wheel is straight. It doesn't take much to adjust the wheel position.
Any slop in the connector spline on the shaft just forward of the firewall under the hood? Otherwise Ghost is on the money. But I wonder how it got like this and that is what would concern me.
Thats a career video for a 2 minute job af adjusting drag link but informative for newbies. Also good old rainy Oregon keeps the suspension nice and clean but in most of the rest of the world one needs a pipe wrench on there to turn the adjuster. To the OP my other post stands - that was how did the steering get out of adjustment if you never added, modified or replaced anything? How do you know the alignment is good because if you had it in a shop they would have advised you on the wheel off center and probably would have fixed it.
Thanks for the input. I know it's a longer video than it needs to be, but it was helpful for a newbie like me. This Jeep is new to me, and my mechanic checked it out. I assumed the alignment was good because tire wear was even and it tracks well, but I'm going to take it for an alignment and see if they see any reason this could be out of whack. Tie rod or otherwise. I appreciate the help!
