my old sierra looked like that bad pic there.

Anyways, i work with rust every day (Ziebart) The BEST product for stopping rust thats already formed is this, which can be found at any autozone or advance auto.

Made by permatex, doesnt require any water before use, just spray it on and it will convert the rust within 15 minutes turning it a lovely dark brown/black color.

Then just spray some rubberized undercoating on top and forget about it. or use that POR 15 stuff if you like making messes

My 2000 TJ is still looking pretty good with about 125K miles, and daily driven use in NE Ohio winters (live in snowbelt, liberal use of salt/chemicals on roads). The key is to keep it clean during the winter, and a couple times a year I hit it with a wire brush and spray it with rustoleum. Has been a very effective preventative measure. Doing the same on the JK.

I've always used the spray can.

I deal with corrosion a lot on my airplane and there are many inhibitors out there that are great at keeping rust under control (for aluminum or steel). LPS is a very common aviation grade company and LPS 3 is the stuff to get. CLP (use for my guns and airplane) is another lubricant/rust inhibitor. For better protection you can get Corrosion X or ACF-50. All of these are temporary solutions as you only "impede" corrosion, never stop it. All metal is in the process of corroding from the time it is formed until it turns into dirt again. Oh...do not use WD-40. While it is a water displacer (thus the WD) it does not afford much protection or inhibit existing rust.

After one winter with snow and heavy salt my axles were very rusty. In the spring I wire brushed and then I used a rust converter to stabilize the rust (Found it at Wal-Mart and is the same stuff James76 used), then I put Rustolium over that. So far there are no signs of re-rusting. I am keeping my fingers crossed for this winter.

Id had some rust in the same area you did. In fact a little bit more. I used a wire brush, then prepped it with a degreaser and etcher and covered the whole area with POR-15. Two coats and it dries hard as a rock. From what I have heard from others, POR-15 is a great product if you are willing to do the work. I have also coated my floors with it. I also might hit the whole under carriage with LP-5 before the winter.

I used to just hit my TJ frame with black rustoleum. I like the idea of POR 15 or the other spray stuff recommended earlier.
