Tailgate rattle, caused by bigger tire?

I messed around with the adjustment. Ended up breaking one of the darn bolts off. So, the little adjustment took a trip to the parts store to get some tougher hardware.

I have to give the gate a good push to get it to latch tight but it does seem to have much less rattle. I still get a little rattle on bigger bumps.

Anyone know where the rattle is coming from? Is it the latch rattling on the catch?

Anyway, I am pleased with the almost rattle free gate I have now. I guess until I get a bumper and tire carrier I can live with the little rattle on bigger bumps.

I had the same thing happen to me after installing 33's. Turned out it was two different areas that were rattling. I fixed them both the same way.

The first area was the latch that you adjusted. I just put a light coat of white lithium grease on the contact points and it took car of that.

The second rattle was coming a plate on which the top two lugs are connected.
If you remove your spare you can probably make the lugs move slightly with your hand. This small movement against the tire carrier housing was producing a rattle that would drive me crazy. Just shoot some lithium grease (from a can) between the lug mount plate and the aluminium housing. This should fix it for quite a while. Both my rattles are gone now.

Hope this helps.

Mine has been rattling since last year. Drives me crazy when the top is on. It always seemed like it was coming from inside the tail gate near the hinges and no adjustments made a permanent difference.

Yesterday I noticed all the welds across the top of the tail gate have broken. I suspect at least 1 was already broken on the inside and was causing the rattle. My 35's weigh 144 pounds each so I'm not surprised.

Any suggestions? I really don't want a 3rd thing I have to pull open to get into the back (bike rack, tire rack, tail gate). I found a vendor (not sure if they are a sponsor) selling a rack that bolts into the hinges, but I'm wondering if the tail gate is too far gone??? Are the broken welds part of the tail gate's structure or are they just holding on the outer shell?

I placed a couple of felt chair protectors between the hinges to tighten them up along with the gate hinge as others have suggested. Works great. I had to remove the plastic hinge covers though. The felt pushed the covers off.

They help with the noise, caertainly. Mine recently came misaligned and the noise was crazy.. They obviously do nothing for the weight.. Going to have to get a tire carrier. OR Fab has the hinge mounted carrier which is the cheapest option.. Rancho bumper is the next cheapest option I've found followed by the Smittybilt.

And I am 100% sure it's because I have been using these Daystar bump stops from day one. You would'nt think they do much but you would be amazed how well the stabilize the spare from moving at all.
