Like if I have it in 4 Hi and want to go into 4 Lo do I bump the jeep a bit on the gas and slide the manual transmission into neutral then pull back on the t-case shifter then or let the jeep roll in a crawl in 1st gear and slide the t-case lever into neutral then 4lo, does the clutch in or clutch out play a part?

Seriously.... I'm not being sarcastic I don't know what you mean by "moving in neutral" which component do you want in neutral the transmission or t-case or both?

Man I'm really feeling new at this LOL

Oh and feel free to post up some pics of your rig... by the small avatar and the list of mods in your sig it sounds exactly what I'd like to do to mine... same colour and all lol! What gears are you running just curious... I have the 2 door X as well with 3.21's... again a victim of my inexperience..... looking back... I'd have made sure thay came with 4.10's!
Read the instructions in your manual for shifting in/out of 4LO, that will explain it in detail. By doing this procedure I have never had any issues getting the Jeep to shift smoothly.

The samething happened to me! The ring that holds everything together is made of teflon. I later found out that the TJs ring is made of metal, so I swapped mine out for TJ transfer case cable and I'm good to go.

For a future event you can pull the shifter link manually.

Sorry I don't. My mech just so happened to have a spare TJ transfer case cable. Give Mopar a call. You have to purchase the entire cable. The ring isn't sold seperately.

The whole "moving while shifting into 4lo" thing is really...iunno.

The gears don't "line up" any better when you've moving, it's just that when you're moving and if they DON'T line up, since you've moving you just keep pressure on the lever and it'll slip into place as the gears move.

If you're not moving and the gears are fine, you're fine, the lever will slip in. If you're not moving and the gears aren't lining up, it'll be pretty obvious (the lever just won't go into 4lo). Let the jeep roll a foot or two and try again, it'll work.

IMO you'd have to pretty obviously be trying to force the lever into 4lo "too hard" while stopped with gears that aren't line up for this to happen. I don't think this happens as a result of abuse or "forcing" it, but because something is wrong with the design or the materials.

x2 on that. In mud it is really hard to keep the Jeep rolling in neutral at 2-3 mph while in mud and shifting the gearbox and the t-case. Minimum it takes 5 seconds and by that time the Jeep stops. I just follow the above rule. It will slip in fine if it's lined up. If it's not move a little bit and try again. It will slide in like butter when it's all set up right.

I've never really had a problem shifting it while completly stopped. Like the previous posters stated, you will know if it is not lined up right.

He was talking about taking it out of 4lo. You guys are talking about putting it in. Not a huge difference, but I would think that if you are already locked it should just slip out seeing as how everything is locked it should be "lined up."

I know what you mean about trying to put it in and then pull forward a bit to see if it will slide in. I used to do that in the TJ.

I understand about moving a bit to "line things up" when going into to a range selection as it makes sense but I was already in 4lo and taking it out of that range and going back to 4hi and 2wd in their respective order. Taking it out of 4lo to neutral I was stopped and didn't even get a chance to rock it to get it into 4hi..... I dunno... I think it was just one of those things or my luck (which hasn't been very good with my rig as far as defects go!)

I never "forced" anything as I was only putting the usual amount of pressure on the shifter (no, not standing on it pressure) then all of a sudden.... loose in my hand!? I've even since had time to look all over the place where it happened since the snow has melted and can't find it anywhere so I'm really inclined to believe that this may have even been off for a bit and that "final shift" was enough to push it off the end of the t-case lever.

But really.... teflon retaining clip!
