Does the tow package for the auto Jk include an auxillary tranny cooler? I'm going to add one to mine even though I'm going to to very little with mine if at all.

I'd like to add one also--if anyone has installed an aftermarket or MOPAR tranny cooler, please post up. I want to get one installed soon--I'm concerned about the over-heating issue; I pull a trailer pretty frequently.

I don't have the numbers, but if I recall correctly, the gvwr is pretty small. Trailers usually have about 10% of the load on the tounge. So 3500# would put about 350# on the hitch ( back from the axle). This would be more than 350 on the axle due to the distance between the hitch and axle. To have a higher tow rating may mean stiffer springs (higher capacity) which likely comprimised ride and articulation.

You probably can tow 5-6 thousand pounds, but would need to do it with no gear and no passengers.

That sounds more like it than the overheating...

technically not very smart, but i only had problems when the roads started going uphill. i just spent most of the time in 5th gear. no problems braking.
so, i was 1200lbs over the limit. i had no idea the trailer was that heavy until i got to the scales at the end of the trip. i am obviously terrible at estimating weight, but it worked out okay.
i have the 4.10 gears in the rubicon, stock BFG's at the time.
That would be 1700lbs over weight in your 2-door Rubi w/ 4.10 axles. Your 2-door Rubi only has a 2000 lb tow rating.

Wrangler:
Rubicon
4.10 = 2000 lbs

Sahara & X models:
3.73 w/ trailer tow group = 2000 lbs
3.73 = 1000 lbs
3.21 = 1000 lbs

Wrangler Unlimiteds:
Rubicon
4.10 = 3500 lbs

Sahara & X models:
3.73 w/ trailer tow group = 3500 lbs
3.73 = 1000 lbs
3.21 = 1000 lbs

This info comes directly from jeep.com. I find it extremely hard to believe 3.73s on an Unlimited has the same tow rating as the 2-door, but that is what mother-Jeep wants us to believe.

I do remember from an online Q&A session with a DC engineer is that the JK can safely tow more but it would require additional tranny cooling.

Why the Liberty either comes with the cooler or can just plain handle more weight...I do not know...doesn't make sense.

All of the 2008 Liberty configurations I looked at with the 3.7 V6 only had a 2000 lb tow rating. Where are any of you seeing that they have a higher rating? Were you looking at an older diesel model?

Default liberty towing capacity

I have towed a 20' foot boat with my 2 DR X auto with 4.10. Boat trailer has surge brakes which are not the greatest but definitely helps. Only went about 15 miles highway, no problems, but definitely new it was back there. overdrive was off.

Question about capacities from Liberty are below. This is from the Jeep site on the 2007 tab under liberty. Towing: 5000lbs.

CAPACITIES/WEIGHTS
Weight Distribution - Automatic Transmission - % Rear 53.0
Payload Capacity - Standard [lb] 1150
Weight Distribution - Manual Transmission - % Front 48.0
Weight Distribution - Manual Transmission - % Rear 52.0
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) - Standard [lb] 4950
Fuel Tank Capacity [gal] 20.5
Weight Distribution - Automatic Transmission - Maximum [lb] 1150
Base Curb Weight [lb] - with Manual Transmission [lb] 3767
Towing Capacity - Maximum (When Properly Equipped) [lb] 5000
Weight Distribution - Automatic Transmission - % Front 47.0
Base Curb Weight [lb] - with Automatic Transmission [lb] 3771
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) - Maximum [lb] 5350

Rubicons aren't the only ones with 4.10 gears standard. I have them on my Sahara too. Interesting that they worded it like that.

I was paraphrasing what was stated on the Jeep.com site and was only looking at 2008 models. I just rechecked and they have the Sahara with 4.10 and auto listed at 3500 lbs. I must have pulled the stats last night from the 6spd.
