Are TPMS interchangeable?
I was just wondering if TPMS sensors are simply interchangeable or are they vehicle specific. Meaning, if you had two Jeeps and swapped wheels, would each automatically recognize the new sensors or would they need to be reprogrammed or what?
Also, the TPMS on ours are the valve stem type yes? Are they fairly easy to swap out or is it a big hassle?
Thanks for the info.

They're mostly interchangeable. Different manufacturers use different brands and they operate in different frequencies. I believe the JK operates in 433MHZ frequency; that's what it says on my discounttiredirect invoice when I ordered my wheels and tires. Someone correct me if i'm wrong.
I would guess that if you changed tires from one Jeep to another (this is assuming by Jeep you mean the same thing we all do here - a Wrangler JK).
We have two Jeeps. My wife has the TPMS, but mine does not. We switched wheels for a while, and, when we switched back, the service guys were telling me it sometimes takes a few miles of driving to get the sensors to link back up with the system*.
Now, I do not know anymore than that... but it makes me think if you switched wheels between to Jeeps and drove for a bit - it would sync. Never tested it though.
*edit: with the system after replacing wheels. They said it should sync right up since these were the same wheels it had.

The sensors are easy to remove and reinstall. The valve stem shaft is threaded with a gasket around the stem base. the stem is pushed thru the hole in the wheel, the outer nut is threaded on the stem and tightened snugly, ( not tight enough to split the gasket nor loose enough to leak). Mount tire and drive, the system ''reads'' periodically and will set itself....

Should. I had a set of 2013 Rubicon wheels and tires on my 2008 JKU. TPMS kept throwing an error. Put 2008 Sensors back on and all was fine. Kept 2013 sensors in a drawer. When I bought a 2014 JKU Sport, I bought another set of Rubicon takeoffs without sensors. Used the 2013 sensors I had lying around and they worked immediately.
