Are TPMS interchangeable?
My fault, I did read it as a question. Makes sense with your above post that this was a statement. I didn't read it close enough.
Speaking of TPMS, well...how does it work? How does the sensor know what tire it's reading to be able to tell my dash display that the right rear is low? How does it know it's the right rear sensor? And does it reset when I rotate them to be positions? What about the spare? Does it send a signal somewhere if it goes low?
I know on some cars the units have to be programmed for their location. So if the tires are rotated a relearn process is used to reset the sensors. Not sure if the newer vehicles will set location automatically.
I have a 2012 sahara jku. I have 2 extra sets of rims. One is 2013 moabs and the other 2014 rubicons. Obviously the sensors wont work on my rig. Is there a way to change the reader on the 2012 to accommodate the extra rims?
+1 I have a 2012 and sold the OEM polished wheels and purchased a new set of takeoffs from a 2014. The TPMS on the 2014 send out an error message. And they cannot be programmed to work. I will have to buy 2012 specific TPMS.
When I changed wheels and tires I kept the factory tpms for my new rims. However 2 of them stripped while trying to remove so I had to leave them on stock wheels. New sensors were $80 ea from the dealer. I purchased 2 on eBay for $14 total including shipping. They all linked up just fine after about a 1/4 mile of driving. There is a frequency code on the sensor that you have to match so that they all sync.
