Does the lever move freely, like it's not connected to anything?

If so, the retainer clip at one end of the cable has broken.

Do you hear a click when you step on brake pedal? Sounds like the interlock might be faulty.

Override instructions:

Your vehicle may be equipped with a shift lock manual
override. The manual override may be used in the event
that the shift lever should fail to move from Park with the
key in the ON position and the brake pedal depressed. To
operate the shift lock manual override, perform the
following steps:
1. Firmly set the parking brake.
2. Using a flat blade screwdriver, carefully remove the
shift lock manual override cover which is located on the
PRNDL bezel, in front of the P (Park) graphic.
3. Depress and maintain firm pressure on the service
brake pedal.
4. Using the screwdriver, reach into the manual override
opening. Press and hold the shift lock lever down.
5. Depress the shifter release button and shift into N
(Neutral).
6. The vehicle may then be started in N (Neutral).
Have your vehicle inspected by your local authorized
dealer, if the shift lock manual override has been used.

Took apart center console and found the cable came off shifter. After fitting it back on it works fine. Going to auto parts store tomorrow to see how it is suppose to stay on. Looks like bushing broke, it's not like I am slap stick racing it!

The TJs had that issue....first time I have heard of it on JK. Typically the issue on JK is at the transfer case.

I think you will find a trip to the dealer's parts counter necessary.

I strongly recommend that you do a little preventative maintenance while you have the console off and replace the transfer case shifter bushing too. The console is such a pain in the ass to remove and the bushing will break, it is just a matter of time.

Also, don't be surprised it the dealer does not have the parts and you have to wait a week or so. I fixed my transfer case with metal bushings from Autozone for less money. If you do a search you will find there are numerous fixes for this all too common problem.

Good luck.
