My old '83 Mercedes 380SE uses one of those; the Germans have been using them since the '70s. I like them because you can see what's going on with your motor wear-wise by the amount of shiny, sparkly stuff parked in there.

It pretty much is a "regular" one, except without the metal case. If you cut open a spin on filter, thats whats in there.

I havent seen what they look like on the 2012 jeeps... but my mazda had a simlar style. Just a warning, be careful on how you take the cap off and on. They are easy to break and you cant buy them at your auto store. So if you break one on a sunday you maybe screwed. This wont become a problem right away. Wait till you get some miles on the jeep then they maybe harder to get on and off.

My son's '10 Chevy has a cartridge filter. By the way, these types of oil filters are OLD OLD OLD.....Cars had these back when I was a kid in the early fifties. They were mounted low on the block (Chevy small block) pointing strait down. The can was held to the block by a long bolt up thru the center. Talk about a hell of a mess when changing the oil. When spin-on filters became common, everyone danced. Now the cartridge filter mounted high is the best of all worlds!!!

P.S. the chain auto stores sell purpose made filter cap tools for these new set-ups.
