It is designed to create negative pressure behind the airdam so that higher pressure air rushes in to fill that low pressure void thus cooling the radiator and engine. I learned that on this forum! P.S. Mine is at the bottom of a mud pit.

I first lost mine when I backed over a stump and it caught and pulled the air damn off. I didnt notice a difference but I put it back on anyway. Then I was backing out of a big puddle and the water pulled it off again. It has sat in my garage since then. I have driven on long drives since then (6 hour+) and never noticed any difference.
