Undercarriage surface rust
Hi Everyone,
I will be purchasing my first Jeep Monday. It is a 2008 JK X. It won't stay stock for long. I already have stuff on order.
My question is: The Jeep came from Hawaii, so there's some surface rust on the undercarriage. It's been a while since I've done automotive painting so is there anything new on the market? What has worked best for you.
Thank you

Dealing w/ the early 90's XJ i have more experience w/ rust than wheeling
Anyways, while its only surface rust, get under there w/ anything you have to scrape it off: Fine grit sand paper, wire brush, or you can try POR-15 or similar product if its not that bad. Once that is done, so far i've only been able to go 3 or 4 years before it starts coming back, rocks kicking up, sand in the winter etc etc is bound to get through the paint and expose the metal. Solution-Truck bed liner. I did it myself w/ a can of Herculiner (the cheaper than Rhino-liner brand from auto zone), prep the metal and then roll this on...i'm going on 6 years rust free w/ my 95XJ w/ MINIMAL rock chips that are easily touched up. Good luck.

I've seen that done on a few other makes/models. They were rather "spotty" w/ the application. They only hit a couple areas leaving a lot of exposed metal to end up rusting anyways for some reason. How did they do w/ your jeep? Is it worth the extra $$.
They got underneath the Jeep real good but not very much on the axle tubes. They have a lifetime warranty and you can get them to touch it up anytime you want. It's a company called Ziebart, the only problem is they don't have very many dealers in the southern states. But I guess we don't get the snow in Texas that the northern states get. That's the only reason I could come up with.
