Default Use Wet Vac to Suck up Power Steering Fluid?

I keep reading that people use a turkey baster to suck up the steering fluid from the reservoir. Has anyone tried using a wet vac to suck up the fluid instead?

Do you think this will damage anything?

I don't know how flammable PS fluid is. If it is flammable and conditions were just right you could ignite a vapor cloud. Getting it out of the ShopVac would be tricky too. That vac would always smell like PS fluid. You may not use it in the home very much but after this you wouldn't be able to ever again. From an environmental standpoint you should not throw PS fluid in the trash the way you probably normally dump your VAC collector.

So, use a turkey baster or find another way. Why are you dumping the reservoir? Is there a location where you can disconnect a hose to drain the system?

I use a Mityvac brake bleeder. Since the fluid is collected into a graduated reservoir it makes it easy to put back in what you take out, too.

If you over filled it use a turkey baster. Everyone has overfilled something at one time or another. Don't use a vac.

is the power steering fluid used in the jeep transmission fluid?? if so that stuff is like alien blood to some plastics and paints. I think a turkey baster would be safer!!

why are you trying to suck up p/s fluid from the reservior? Whatever the reason is, don't use a shop vac. Turkey baster, mityvac, removing the return line from the pump are better ways of doing it depending on what you are trying to acheive.

My assumption in replying was that he was changing it so that's how I answered. Could be wrong...
