Default Viair 400P Automatic Portable Air Compressor - Pros & Cons

I'm considering adding a portable air compressor to my Jeep. After some research, I've found the Viair 400P Automatic Portable Air Compressor which appears to be a nice unit. I like the idea of a portable vs. permanent install. Right now all I have are stock 32's and don't see that I'll ever go beyond 33's in the future. Thus, the 35" rating of the 400P seems adequate.

VIAIR Corporation - 400P-Automatic Part No. 40045

If you have recommendations for a different compressor, please tell me which one and why.

Also, I'd like to know your feelings about portable vs. permanent.

All opinions are most appreciated.

I have the VIAR 400 P Auto and love it. I went portable because we move it from my jeep to my girlfriends. Most all of our gear is shared with the exception of our winches.

I have the 400c mounted under the hood with about a 5-7 gallon tank. It works great. I imagine the portable model is just as good.

I have a smittybilt one and it works great. Portable works good imo cuz u can let a friend borrow it or fellow offroader. The only downside I can c is that it hooks to that car battery so u gotta open the hood. Other than that I love mine

I love mine, have had it forever it seems and have used it a lot. I have filled many 35" & 37" tires for sure. It is the same one as the "C" only "P" for portable. Viair makes really good compressors, IMO you can't go wrong with it. And as far as hooking it to the battery goes, it's a two second job. And considering the time you will spend filling your tires, and waiting for everyone else to fill their tires, it's no big deal at all.

i use mine regularly, it works great, you'll be very happy with it.

Pros:
it's quicker than some/a lot of other portable compressors
it shuts off when pressurized/ no need to turn it off between tires
you can measure tire pressure as you air up/down
you wont' be the last one airing up

Cons:
can't run air tools
not as fast as compressed air
it gets pretty hot, I let it cool down before I put it pack in the bag
takes up room in the Jeep

I'd still like on board air, but this is a great set-up.

I have a viair portable compressor and love it. It's a very good quality unit. For just a little bit more money you can get the 450p like I have and is 100% duty cycle and can handle inflating large tires without breaking a sweat.

I just got a 450p yesterday

I've used an on board version a couple of times and they went from 20psi to 35psi pretty quick

I chose portable because I like to have my off road stuff gather together in heavy duty cases and ATV strapped to where the back seats attach in my 2 door jk

I'll be building a wooden box for the 450p plus the yellow hose and my AEV deflator and the Viair inflation hose/handle and dial

Will make it easier to strap it down

Matthew
