Water Fording with Standard Trans
I know that using the clutch is a big no no when water fording (as I have read in many threads), but is shifting possible if I don't use the clutch ?? Just wondering if this will end up giving the same damage as shifting with clutch ??
Shifting without using the clutch brings its own problems (tearing up tranny internals). Just pick the right gear for the speed you wish to go before you hit the water and maintain a good steady pace. I usually ford water in 2nd.
This has been discussed in length, I recommend doing a search -- but the short and sweet is if you depress your clutch in the water you risk sucking in sand/water/other goodness which makes your clutch go bye bye! It can really cost you a LOT of money to fix because it takes a lot with it..basically your whole transmission gets hosed. pun intended.

EDIT: worked it into my sig...

Shifting without the clutch?!! Your local mechanic's gonna love that
As was said above... choose an appropiate gear (2nd or 3rd will probably be more than acceptable) before entering the water then run through. That aside, if you are running through water with a nice and muddy bottom shifting increases your chances of bogging down.
