It's kinda nice to be able to upshift or downshift a tranny when you want to.

Key words being "when you want to"!

Not so nice to suddenly find you're in 1.

If you wanted to switch gears, why did you get an auto?

If you are resting your hand on the shifter, you are inadvertently shifting gears. I have done it several times. The numbers to the right of the "D" indicate what gear you are in. This is true for automatic transmissions. You really should familiarize yourself with the operation of your Jeep.

Do you have overdrive on? Sounds like it might be the issue. It will keep your rpms high.

O/D on keeps the rpm high?

Wasn't true for my last jeep - but I guess technology has improved since I bought that. And I looked in the manual but there's no mention that I could find of the autostick feature and dash symbols.

But it's good to know that you know everything about Jeeps. I'll know who to go to in future...

No overdrive. Just inadvertent shifting. Though from reading around it seems some Jeeps have extra sensitive shifters.

I'm a little baffled why he said overdrive on will keep your rpm high.

When you say "no overdrive", is that beacause you turn it off when you start the Jeep?

By "no overdrive" I meant the car wasn't in O/D when this happened.

I imagine the "keep your rpms high" thinking might have meant if I were in O/D and then suddenly shifted manually?
