Wow, that diagram was very helpful. 2-door X, manual tranny, 30/44 w/ 4.10.

Here's a question: Is it worth beefing up the front D30, or just swap the whole assembly with a D44? The largest tire I'll probably ever use is 35", and that's a big guess; 33" w/ a small lift looks to be my choice.

Unfortunately there are no alloy shafts out yet, so the only thing you can do is add an ARB, or other selectable locker. This would only increase the strength of your carrier and would also increase the likelyhood of you breaking axle shafts and u-joints. It is my OPINION that upgrading to a 44 is the best option AT THIS TIME. Even if you were able to upgrade your 30 to alloy shafts and a stronger carrier, your ring and pinion would still be a little weak. Can you run 35's on it? Sure you can. It is just a risk. I have a friend who runs a built D30 with 36" SS Iroks and hasn't broken a shaft or u-joint yet, and he does some SERIOUS stuff. Good luck.

Unfortunately some people would have a tough time telling the differences visually. Just because you and I can, doesn't mean they should be called babies. Besides, I'm sure there is plenty that you yourself are lacking in education. Not everyone is born knowing their axles by heart. I was simply asking if there was a specific list of which wrangler came with which axles. If this list was readily available, or one these members could create one that was available, it could be helpful in areas such as making the right choice before buying a new ride. There are quite a few individuals on this forum that don't own their dream Jeep just yet and a thread like this could be very helpful in such areas. The members on this thread have been very helpful in relaying what they know about their personal Jeeps. The picture of axle gaskets in particular. But like I was saying before, some people just have a really hard time catching subtle differences in pictures.

and even the axles can be decieving...

you could put upgraded gears / shafts / U-joints in an axle, and make it better or as good as the next higher model...
